User access is controlled in two ways.
Each user has a set of defaults and limits which apply to jobs he/she may submit (such as number of copies) and a set of privileges. To view and edit the users' permissions, two interactive client programs spuser (character terminal) and xmspuser (X Windows) are provided. In addition, command line utilities and API functions enable access to the systme to be controlled.

Against each user is a set of privileges which specify what operations he/she may perform. These can likewise be viewed and edited.
Class codes are a simple and effective method for segregating groups of users, jobs and printers so that whilst still managed overall by Xi-Text, various users may only view defined subsets.
