One of the aims of Xi-Text is to increase printing throughput to the maximum whilst minimising the impact on the system. To achieve this, the product is implemented in the following ways.
Xi-Text is event-driven. This means that no "polling" is done to check for new jobs, the product is only activated by the submission, completion or other changes to print jobs.
This means that an absolutely minimum impact on the system occurs when Xi-Text is not in use or even when printing is in progress.
Xi-Text is a complete "ground-up" rewrite of UNIX printing not a layer on top of lp. Unlike the existing print mechanisms, output to printers is handled directly, not via a chain of shell scripts.
This gives a significance performance increase, in certain situations 16-fold has been noticed.
Printers are always held on "hot standby", i.e. open connection and ready to send data. This means a minimal interval between submission of jobs and start of printing.
